DETERMINING SIGNS OF WEAR ON YOUR ROOF

A visual inspection of your roof at least once a year will help you determine if your roofing material is showing signs of age and needs to be replaced. When performing an exterior inspection look for torn, cracked, curling or missing shingles as well as obvious signs of wear or holes in the shingles. These are indications that they are damaged and need to be replaced. Sometimes doing an interior inspection is warranted and this would be done from the attic of your home. Any areas where the roof deck is sagging or there are signs of water damage or leaking would indicate a damaged roof.

Here are some guidelines when preparing to hire a roofing contractor.
  • Hire only licensed contractors. Contact your State licensing agency to verify that a contractor is licensed.
  • Compare a minimum of three bids.
  • Get a written contract and don't sign anything until you understand the terms.
  • Don't be pressured into making an immediate decision. Reputable contractors will not resort to high-pressure sales tactics.
  • Ask about other details such as the time frame for repairs to be complete or how they will protect your landscaping or other parts of your house during the roofing process.
  • Don't pay in cash.
  • Only make the final payment when you're satisfied with the job.
