IS IT TIME TO REPLACE YOUR WINDOWS?
Five cases where those old windows might need to go:
There are drafts in your home or your energy bills are excessive. Wood windows can warp from exposure to the elements that can leave gaps where air can enter resulting in energy loss. The leading cause of high bills besides an inefficient furnace; is leaking windows. Replacing old, worn windows with energy efficient ones could be more cost-effective than continuing to pay high energy bills.
It’s difficult to open and shut your windows. Especially true for older double-hung windows that have issues with balance. Windows should function smoothly.
Condensation between the glass of double- or triple-paned windows. Moisture in between the panes of glass indicates the seal has failed and the insulated glass is no longer doing its job.
The glass in your double- or triple-paned windows appears cloudy. This is caused by the failure of the seal between the panes resulting in the loss of the inert gas in between the panes. The glass becomes “etched” from minerals in the moist air and the window becomes cloudy.
Window sash is damaged on the exterior. Cracks or damage in the vinyl clad sash of the window will cause moisture to get into the wood beneath the vinyl. This could be due to hail or other factors and the problem should be addressed before it affects other parts of the window.
